| The history of Bahraini-US friendship extends back more than one hundred years. Americans founded the first hospital in Bahrain in 1893 and established the first American school in our country in 1911. Today, the two countries cooperate closely in economic, financial, political, defense and security matters. Bahrain is a true friend to the United States. We value our longstanding relationship with Americans, welcoming, as always, their know-how, their entrepreneurial spirit and the investments that prove so beneficial to both countries. Countless Bahraini citizens have been educated in American schools in Bahrain itself and many others have traveled to universities in the US to complete world-class educations in medicine, engineering, and technology. Politically, Bahrain has lent consistent support to the United States. In defense and security matters, Bahrain is a major non-NATO ally and has served the US Navy for some 50 years at Mina Sulman, current home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet. Bahrain also supports strongly the global war on terrorism and the US-led war in Afghanistan. In Iraq, Bahrain is helping in efforts to reconstruct and bolster the Iraqi economy. Bahrain also seeks to combat terrorist financing and often uses its financial and banking acumen to suggest methods to trace and control such activities in the region. “Bahrain is a dependable and longstanding U.S. business partner in an unstable region.” On the international front, the US and Bahrain are partners in the United Nations, the WTO, and other political and economic forums aimed at promoting peace and prosperity throughout the world.
